Why We Need to Be Green in the Lake District

WHEN you’re visiting the Lake District it’s important to remember why we need to be green.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Climate change is a global problem that affects us locally. And though you want to come on holiday to forget about the world’s problems, we need to be green here in the Lakes. And it’s not difficult.

Any actions we take here are having a wider impact around the globe. And here at the Cedar Manor we have been quietly establishing ourselves as champions of sustainability, while giving you the best holiday experience. And it just means the occasional reminder why we need to be green.

Car Free Day

The biggest sources of carbon emissions in the Lake District are from our food and travel. We choose to provide you with locally-sourced food and drink. And we can guide you to explore on foot, by bike, by boat or bus. Just one car-free day during your holiday helps to make a difference. And we have a bus-stop right outside our door.

We are supporters of the Lake District Foundation which is working to make the Lake District be an inspirational example of sustainable development in action. This is a place where a prosperous economy, world-class visitor experiences and vibrant communities come together to sustain our spectacular landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage.

Keep the Lakes Healthy

And at the heart of the Lake District are our lakes and rivers. Healthy rivers and lakes are essential to human life. They provide us with drinking water, they are home to important species of wildlife, they provide recreational spaces for our health and wellbeing. Tourism plays an important role in the economy of the Lake District, and is dependent on our high quality environment and landscape.

So with your help, we can work together to make sure you have a fantastic experience, while keeping this place special for future generations to enjoy.

Follow any advice and guidance from the Lake District National Park Authority. If you are using the lakes to swim or paddle board or kayak, please help to prevent the spread of pollution and invasive non-native species (INNS) by following the Greener Boating Code.

Avoid Plastics

And as we do here at the hotel, avoid single use plastics wherever possible. Most plastic litter ends up in our water bodies and eventually in our seas. Choose sustainable alternatives wherever possible, take litter home or put it in the bin.

We are also supporting campaigns to save our hedgerows to show why we need to be green. Each year nearly 6,000 miles of old hedges have been completely uprooted while less than 1,200 miles of new ones planted. This matters because with this loss of habitat we will lose mammals, birds, and insect species. Hedges also act as wildlife corridors allowing dispersal between isolated habitats.

Save Our Hedgerows

Without hedgerows we lose the ability to prevent soil erosion. They create a natural barrier that prevents water run-off from fields, so the ground is less likely to dry out.

So join us in supporting efforts here in the Lake District to be aware, when you’re on holiday, why we need to be green. It’s easy!
